How My Clients Practiced These Four Behavior Changing Skills
How My Clients Practiced These Four Behavior Changing Skills
The way we develop a behavior change is the same way we improve our ability to lift weights: with REPS.
Progress happens with intention and repetition.
These are four skills that my clients practiced, in GSD Coaching, this past month.
Skill #1: Flexible Thinking
The behavior change opportunity:
My client recognized that she had too many goals.
How she practiced her flexible thinking rep:
She took the time to have a coaching check-in. We discussed how she could prioritize what she felt would be most impactful right now. Then she chose one goal to focus on, for the next few weeks.
Skill #2: Cognitive Flexibility
The behavior change opportunity:
My client missed a planned workout.
How she practiced her cognitive flexibility rep:
She looked at her calendar, and found the best option to schedule her next workout.
She effectively managed her mindset around thoughts like, “This always happens.” or, “It’ll be impossible to stay consistent, with young kids.”
Skill #3: Self Awareness & Environment
The behavior change opportunity:
My client was having difficulty waking up, at her desired time.
How she practiced her self awareness & environment reps:
She created her own snooze system experiment, based on what she knows works for her.
She planned and prepared, to execute her experiment. She set up her environment, to encourage her to follow through, with the plan.
Skill #4: Reality Based Planning
The behavior change opportunity:
My client didn’t know what to make her family for dinner.
How she practiced her reality based planning rep:
She started saving meals that her family really liked, that were easy to have on week nights.
She created a system of where to keep saved recipes, so she didn’t forget about them. This way she could easily incorporate them, into her weekly meal planning.
The behavior change is what they WANT to be doing.
The skill is what they're PRACTICING, to achieve their goals.
Follow-through requires a specfic set of behavior change skills.
Skills require practice.
Practice requires repeating reps, over and over.
